by Lara Tellis, STC South-Central President

I first joined STC as a graduate student when the Clemson Master of Arts in Professional Communication (MAPC) program started a student chapter. That was back in 2009, and I went to my first Summit in Atlanta that year. Ever since, I have made sure to renew my membership.

The value of STC to me is the opportunity to share ideas with other technical communicators and also to gain leadership experience. Leadership opportunities at my current employer have been limited. Fortunately, after gaining experience serving in different admin council roles, this year, I got the privilege to serve as the South-Central Texas chapter president. I don’t think I could find this type of experience (e.g., planning, budgeting, organizing, networking, etc.) outside of a non-profit organization like STC.

STC provides members with numerous opportunities to serve in leadership positions and to build a valuable professional network. Please contact me at president@stc-houston.org if you’re interested in learning more. If you have not done so yet, please renew your membership or join us. https://www.stc.org/membership
