With recent global outbreaks of infectious diseases, including Avian flu, Ebola, MERS, and SARS, many of which crossed regional and continental boundaries, researchers and practitioners from universities and health organizations are focused on developing better approaches to cross-cultural health and medical communication that would aid in addressing such outbreaks quickly and ethically. Different countries and cultures adhere to their established norms, procedures, and values, which sometimes go against established medical practices imposed by global health organizations.
To enhance our current and future instructors’ preparedness, we have invited two leaders in the field to lead a workshop on cross-cultural health and medical communication:
- Dr. Kirk St.Amant, Professor and Eunice C. Williamson Endowed Chair in Technical Communication, Louisiana Tech University, Ruston, LA, who is a distinguished scholar in intercultural and health and medical communication and
- Mr. Francisco Sanchez, Deputy Emergency Management Coordinator, Public Information Officer (PIO), and liaison for Judge Ed Emmett in the Harris County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, who has extensive experience in crisis management and served as the main public information officer during Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita
The event will provide attendees with approaches and perspectives they can use to identify, understand, and address the expectations individuals from different cultures have for what constitutes credible and effective communication about health and medical topics. Participants will receive a certificate of participation.
During the one-day workshop, the presenters plan to cover the following topics:
- How different cultures perceive and communicate about health and medical topics
- What factors individuals can use to understand the dynamics affecting such contexts
- Which models and methods individuals can use to identify variables cultures associate with credible health and medical communication
- What approaches individuals can use to apply this information to create effective informational and instructional health and medical materials for individuals from other cultures
