“Gamification” is one of the hottest buzzwords in education and training, yet I haven’t seen it mentioned much in techcomm. As I’ve mentioned before, I view technical communication as a form of self-paced learning, so in my mind if something has value in the field of education, then it probably has value in the field of techcomm. I’m not going to describe the benefits of gamification in this blog post because there are too many wonderful journal articles, blogs, and research papers that address this topic, but I did want to share an article that I came across written by Michael Thomsen, titled Storytelling Without Stories: Writing for Infinite Replayability that describes how “artfully deployed writing” is used in good game design.
