Happy Holidays to all STC Houston members, STC members, and everyone in the technical communications fields!
We’ve had an eventful few months since the 2018-2019 year started. We’ve hosted three successful program meetings and started using Facebook Live to broadcast discussions at the program meetings, and working with the incredible In Cahoots team to host and run the 2nd Annual In Cahoots Holiday Mixer! Hope to see all STC members, visitors, and interested guest at the Mixer – and the Mixer benefits the Houston Food Bank. Bring a perishable item and get a free raffle ticket to some great prizes such as gift baskets, Astros tickets, and event tickets.
We’ve invited all STC Austin members to join our STC Houston LinkedIn Group. In addition, the STC Austin LinkedIn group has shifted to being a regional Central Texas Technical Communication group for more Austin regional discussions. We are working on a mini-conference in Austin in the February/March timeframe. If any Austin or San Antonio members would like to suggest or volunteer for a presentation, please feel free to contact me at mailto:president@stc-houston.org.
The program meetings are a great time to connect with other writers with a lot of experience to share. We found at one meeting that our own Lara Tellis and Ann Smith are now working at the same company after mergers. Not only that, but they are working at different ends of a DITA implementation, and were able to ask share knowledge and questions about DITA and content strategy/organization questions. Our Ask the Expert topic has been expanded to the STC Houston Facebook group, and will be a topic at our program meetings.
All these activities are possible because of volunteers. STC Houston, is a volunteer professional organization who want to share the knowledge of technical communication throughout the community. Volunteering allows you to practice your skills and add to your repertoire of professional skills. If you’d like to volunteer for programming, liaison with other groups including students and other STC chapters, website maintenance and updates, newsletters, suggestions for program meetings, or anything else, please contact us. We’d love to have you join the team. Who knows, maybe an official officer role may be in your future!
