December’s meeting was a blast – a networking meeting that incorporated a book swap at the Cadillac bar.
January’s meeting, presented by Meredith Kramer, presented ways to avoid an international incident when working with global teams.
Tips and Tricks for Communicating with a Global Team
Technical communication has gone global. Modern technology allows us to work with subject matter experts or other writing colleagues in other time zones and different environments, all coordinating and working towards the common goal of producing something meaningful.
Whether you work with someone down the hall, in another state, or halfway around the world – communication is key. Learn ways to avoid having a frustrated team struggling with a project that will be late and over budget due to communication issues.
Also during January’s meeting, Jowell Lydon and Stephanie Donovan presented the results of the demographic survey, starting a lively discussion about ways to improve and add more value to the STC Houston chapter. Notes from the Net presented news from the Adobe community, including an examination of the FrameMaker User’s Guide.
February will bring two events:
February 7 is a workshop: Creativity and Career: A Sweet Combo!
Come to this interactive workshop and discussion group to talk about ways you can make a difference in your satisfaction quotient! Do some creativity exercises and think about ways to apply them to the big decisions you may be making for your work life. Whether you are entering the profession of technical communication, working at the journeyman level, or knocking on the retirement door, you can get value from this gathering.
February 10 is our regular program meeting: Information Design: Scratching the Surface.
Both events are presented by Linda Oestreich, a well-known speaker in the world of technical communication, STC (Society for Technical Communication) Fellow and former International President of the Society. She served on that Board of Directors for more than 10 years and has been a member of STC since 1979. She is currently a member of the Houston and San Diego chapters and the Technical Editing SIG. She also co-presents the STC Certificate Program entitled Technical Editing Fundamentals.
