Join the Fun at a Houston Communicators’ Holiday Networking Party

by Linda King, STC Houston President

For the first time this summer, members of the STC Houston Council became aware of the Houston Communication Alliance (HCA), an organization that sponsors two major networking functions each year to bring together professional communicators across the Greater Houston area. To check out the organization and to decide whether to recommend that STC Houston become a participating member, George Slaughter and I attended the HCA networking party last summer. We were surprised and troubled to learn that members of the other organizations in attendance had not heard of STC.

HCA is an association of a dozen or so different professional organizations in Houston. For a small chapter membership fee, all members of those organizations are entitled to attend the HCA networking events and to man tables there that advertise their organizations. The semiannual networking events include a live band for listening and dancing, free hot buffet and soft drinks, and a cash bar.

Based on information we obtained and the event that George and I attended, I recommended that STC Houston participate in the event to publicize our organization and to gain the networking benefits for our members. The council then approved that STC Houston join HCA for one year and re-evaluate the value of our membership for future years.

Because STC Houston is now a member of HCA, all our chapter members are eligible to attend the upcoming HCA holiday mixer to be held at 5:00 to 10:00 P.M. on Thursday, November 29, at 1885 St. James Place in Houston. Free parking is available across the street. Invitations for this event are being printed and will be available at our STC Houston program meeting on November 13. I will forward a PDF copy of the invitation to the STC Listserv.

I encourage you to take off your introvert’s hat and join the party to mix it up with fellow communicators from across the area. If the previous event is a good indication, the music will be good and the food will be great.
