By Cindy Pao, President

On Tuesday, February 25, 2014, members and award winners met together for a celebration of everything wonderful in STC Houston.

Stationed at a long table in a cozy room, 25 people (or so) gathered. We recognized our competitions winners, all of our volunteers, our Distinguished Chapter Service Award winner, our new Associate Fellow, and our new Fellow.

Competitions Winners

Liz Weiman, Deborah Davitt, and Mauri Williams won an Award of Merit for the HP Chromebook 14 Setup Instructions.

Tim Freeman, Chip Bridgeman, Jeff Hemsing, and Paul Radzinski won an Award of Distinction for the PressureWave Formation Pressure Tester Animation Video.

Paul recognized the current admin council (Cindy Pao, Erika Guerra, Julie Garrison, Rachel Thompson, Evalyn Shea, George Slaughter, and Jowell Lydon) for its dedication to the chapter in planning and running program meetings and workshops, publicizing the chapter through its various social-media outlets, and outreach to all technical communicators in the greater Houston area.

Cindy recognized and thanked the other chapter leaders: Elizabeth Navarro, Manager of the Employment Committee; Erika Frensley, Managing Editor of Dateline Houston, and her article authors; Stephanie Donovan, Manager of Membership; Cathy Bettoney, Manager of the Lone Writers SIG; Deborah Long, Manager of the Galleria Area Networking Lunch; and Paul Mueller, Webmaster.

We, as a chapter, rely on all of our volunteers to succeed and thrive. Thank you to everyone who serves!

Distinguished Chapter Service Award (DCSA)

Jowell Lydon is this year’s DCSA winner for the Houston chapter. Jowell is a long-time volunteer for the chapter. He has served in many leadership roles, such as President, Vice President, Treasurer, and chair for the Nominating and Program committees.

Jowell’s citation reads: For your dedicated leadership and service to STC Houston, your drive to help others in any way possible, and all you do to promote the technical communication profession.

Paul Mueller has been awarded the Society’s highest honor, that of Fellow. STC Fellows contribute to the profession and the Society at the highest level, as indicated by their publications, presentations, awards, mentoring, leadership, and community service.

Paul has served in many leadership roles, both in our chapter and at the Society level: President, Vice President, chair for the Nominating and Program committees, Director on the Board, and Summit Conference Chair.

Associate Fellow

I have been recognized by the Society as an Associate Fellow. STC Associate Fellows typically have held multiple leadership positions, published papers, or written articles. We’ve also given presentations and mentored those who are new to the technical communication field.

  1. Howdy exceptional website! Does running a blog similar too this require
a great deal of work? I’ve virtully no knowledge of programming however I hadd been
hoping to start my own blog in the near future.

Anyhow, should you have anny ideas or tips for new blog owners please share.

I understand this is off topic however I just had to ask.Kudos!

    1. Thank you for the compliment! The STC Houston website is a community website (based on WordPress) that has quite a number of talented people working on it (myself excluded). You might consider using to set up your blog – allows you to easily set up a site with little programming knowledge so all you have to worry about is maintaining your blog and getting readers to look at it (which is not quite as easy as it might appear;).
